Waring School Seal

Waring School is a co-educational, academic college preparatory school in Beverly, Massachusetts, United States, for students in grades 6-12.


Founded in 1972 by Philip and Josée Waring, the School offers interdisciplinary studies in Humanities; extensive music, art, and theatre options, challenging mathematics and science courses in state-of-the-art facilities, and a rich curriculum of French language and cultural exchange. Numerous student trips locally and abroad, as well as co-curricular offerings in service and leadership, provide opportunities for personal growth.

Waring's small size and multi-age groupings enable the School to create an empowering network of relationships within the community. A caring and individualistic approach to each student supports his or her personal learning style, while maintaining demanding academic standards.

In the summer of 1972, Philip and Josée Waring founded La Petite École at their home in Rockport with only four students. The Warings believed then, as we do now, that children want to learn, and that everyone learns best when they are interested in what they are doing. So the Warings sought to create an environment that would pique students’ interests and spark their innate desire to learn.

Since its inception, Waring students have been immersed daily in language, art, science, music, humanities, and athletics, with the understanding that love for each of these activities is inherent in everyone and just needs to be found and nurtured.

La Petite École officially became the Waring School in 1976, when the Edith Miles Coolidge estate in Beverly was purchased. Although the school’s size has increased, we continue to keep the class sizes small and the discussions open. We thrive in the belief that school is not the end but rather the beginning of a life-long process; a process that must be cultivated in the individual, as well as the community that surrounds them.

Daily, we strive to develop and nourish a strong, diverse community that shares a common vision: a passion for learning and a commitment to an education that will prepare students for the rigors of life beyond Waring and encourage them to make use of their voices in the larger community.


The campus sits on 32 acres of land including: 3 athletic fields, pine woods, a pond, a stream, and marshland. There are six main buildings on the campus: the Barn, the Theater, the Barn 2, the School, the House, and the Barn 3: Return of the Barn.


The study of liberal arts contributes to promoting human freedom through the knowledge of self and the world. The Humanities serve as the lens through which we see and understand the place and purpose of the subjects in all our academic programs. Math, science, sports, art, music, and language are connected to one another as they revolve around the study of human experience, both historical and intellectual.

The study of a second language enlarges one's world and vision; all students study French. In sixth and seventh grade we introduce French through an Immersion Program. The educational value of French immersion is not just that it gives students a proficiency in a second language, but an early appreciation of other cultures helps Waring graduates deal sensitively with the rest of the world. Our program includes travel to French-speaking places such as France, Montreal, Québec, Martinique, Senegal, and New Orleans. Speaking French allows students to enter these new cultures as guests rather than tourists.

For the last three weeks of the school year after exams, students choose an intensive course, called End Term, from an ever-changing array of options. Sailing aboard a 125 foot windjammer, traveling to North Carolina to build a new home for flood victims, hiking the mountains of Québec, exploring math through music and design, or working at an inner-city school are just a few examples of past offerings. End Term groups are made up of students from all grades and faculty, providing an opportunity for multi-age connections and often resulting in lifelong friendships.


The Waring School Athletics program fosters the development of character and personal responsibility through sports. It promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, fitness and individual mastery of athletic skills. As an integral part of Waring’s mission, athletics promotes the leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to a community built on respect, camaraderie, stewardship, sacrifice, discovery, and pride in individual accomplishment. The Athletics program cultivates lifelong habits for good health, enhances mental alertness and emotional stability, and encourages students to excel to the best of their ability.

Students participate in team sports throughout the academic year: soccer in the fall, basketball (optional) in the winter, and lacrosse in the spring. The following choice of sports and/or theatre are also available to students who have met their sports requirements: cross-country and theatre in the fall, yoga, dance, YMCA and theatre in the winter, and running, theatre, and occasionally tennis in the spring.

The Boys' Varsity and Girls' Varsity soccer teams have won several championships within their respective leagues, including the 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011 seasons, as well as winning the NEPSAC Class D title in 2007. In 2009, the Boys Varsity basketball team won their first championship.
