Iso 3166-2:ro

ISO 3166-2:RO is the entry for codes for the names of the principal subdivisions (e.g., provinces or states) of all countries coded in ISO 3166-1.

Currently for Romania, ISO 3166-2 codes are defined for 41 departments and 1 municipality. The municipality Bucharest is the capital of the country and has special status equal to the departments.

Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The first part is RO, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of Romania. The second part is either of the following:

  • one letter: municipality
  • two letters: departments

The letters are currently used in vehicle registration plates.
